For parents
Why Do Parents Want to Verify a Prospective Bride or Groom Discreetly?
On this page
For many parents, marriage is not only a relationship decision. It involves family expectations, reputation, emotional investment and concern for a son's or daughter's future. Some parents seek information quietly because they fear that raising a question openly may offend the other family or make a promising match collapse.
Why discretion can feel safer
Parents may worry about being labelled suspicious, insulting another family, or creating tension before the couple has built trust. They may also feel responsible for noticing risks their child has not considered. These feelings are understandable, especially when the families are still getting to know one another.
But discretion has limits
There is a difference between privately organising your questions, reviewing information already lawfully available, and secretly accessing private accounts, tracking a person, impersonating them or collecting sensitive data without authority. The latter can violate privacy, damage trust and create legal risk. "Discreet" should never be used as a euphemism for invasive surveillance.
A better way to reduce embarrassment
Start with material, specific questions instead of accusations. Ask the prospective partner to clarify claims and agree on relevant checks that apply fairly to both people. A neutral, consent-based verification process can make the scope clearer and reduce the feeling that one family is singling out the other.
What parents should tell their adult children
Try: "We respect your choice and do not want to create suspicion. Before everyone commits, we would like to make sure the important details are clear. Let's agree on a fair process that respects both people's privacy."
Adult children should remain central to the decision, and checks should not become a tool for coercion or control.
What the law says
The provisions below are summarised from the official text on India Code. Laws and their commencement change, so check the current text or ask a lawyer before you rely on them.
- Section 6 of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 says consent must be free, specific, informed, unconditional and unambiguous, and limited to the personal data needed for the stated purpose.
- Section 3 of the DPDP Act says it does not apply to personal data processed by an individual for a personal or domestic purpose. A family's own enquiries may fall outside it, but a verification service that handles the data is covered.
- Section 319 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 makes cheating by personation, which means pretending to be someone else, an offence. Do not pose as an employer, a relative or an official to get information.
The bottom line
Parents often seek discreet verification because they fear the social cost of asking. The answer is not to shame that concern or endorse secret surveillance. It is to make responsible verification easier to discuss, mutual in principle, lawful in method and proportionate to the decision.

Frequently asked questions
Why do parents verify a prospective partner quietly?
Common reasons include fear of offending another family, social pressure, embarrassment and concern about a child's future.
Is discreet verification always wrong?
Not every private inquiry is the same, but accessing private information or using invasive methods without proper authority is not appropriate. Prefer transparent, lawful and proportionate checks.
How can parents raise the subject respectfully?
Explain the concern without accusation, agree on relevant checks and make the process fair to both people.
