How to Verify a Prospective Groom's Job, Salary and Education in India
On this page
A person's work and education can affect financial planning, location, lifestyle and future goals. It is reasonable to clarify these claims before marriage, provided the process is respectful and lawful. The objective is to understand what has been confirmed, not to judge someone's worth by salary, job title or university name.
Start with precise questions
Ask what the person's current role is, whether they are an employee or contractor, where they are based, and whether the stated salary is gross, net, fixed or includes variable compensation. For education, clarify the exact qualification, institution, graduation year and any professional registration that is relevant to the role.
Documents are useful but not conclusive
Offer letters can be outdated, salary slips can be incomplete, and screenshots may be altered or lack context. Ask for only the information needed, allow sensitive numbers to be masked where appropriate, and agree on a verification method. A document review confirms what the document appears to show; it does not automatically establish that the issuer is genuine or that the information remains current.
Use authorised channels
Where confirmation is necessary, seek the person's informed consent and use the employer's or institution's authorised verification process. Some organisations will not disclose details to third parties. Respect that policy and ask the person to obtain confirmation or provide alternative evidence. Never impersonate the candidate, access their email or accounts, or try to obtain confidential HR records without authority.
How to think about salary claims
Clarify whether a stated figure means annual fixed compensation, total cost to company, take-home pay, commission, equity or business income. These figures are not equivalent. A recent document may support a discussion, but it should not be used to pressure someone into disclosing more financial information than is relevant.
Professional credentials and self-employment
For regulated professions, use the relevant official professional register where one exists. For entrepreneurs and self-employed people, discuss the nature and stage of the business, income variability, liabilities and future plans. A company registration or website alone does not prove personal income or business profitability.
If something does not match
Ask a neutral question and give the person a fair opportunity to explain. Employment dates, company names and job titles can change; a mismatch is a prompt for clarification, not an automatic finding of fraud. Record the outcome accurately and keep private documents secure.
What the law says
The provisions below are summarised from the official text on India Code. Laws and their commencement change, so check the current text or ask a lawyer before you rely on them.
- Section 6 of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 says consent must be free, specific, informed, unconditional and unambiguous, and limited to the personal data needed for the stated purpose.
- Section 3 of the DPDP Act says it does not apply to personal data processed by an individual for a personal or domestic purpose. A family's own enquiries may fall outside it, but a verification service that handles the data is covered.
- Section 319 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 makes cheating by personation, which means pretending to be someone else, an offence. Do not pose as an employer, a relative or an official to get information.
The bottom line
Reliable employment and education verification is specific, consent-based and honest about limitations. It helps you discuss practical expectations before marriage without turning income or credentials into a measure of personal character.

Frequently asked questions
Can I call someone's employer to verify their salary?
Do not seek confidential information without authority. Obtain consent and follow the employer's authorised verification process; the employer may decline to disclose details.
Does a salary slip prove current employment?
Not by itself. It may be one piece of evidence, but its date, source and context matter.
How do I verify a degree?
Use the institution's official process or an authorised credential-verification route, with the person's consent where required.
